Why pipe freezing is a          problem...

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Also, pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

If You Suspect a Frozen Pipe...

If you open a faucet and no water comes out, don't take any chances. Call Magic Carpet. If a  water pipe bursts, turn off the water at the main shut-off valve (usually at the water meter or where the main line enters the house); leave the faucet (s) open until repairs are completed.

To avoid freeze ups on an              extremely cold day.....

·
Maintain higher than normal temperatures  (3-4 degrees).

· Turn on your faucets and let the water trickle                  constantly. Both hot & Cold!

· Open cabinet doors under the sinks. This will                   allow the heat to warm the pipes.

· Insulate pipes-Insulation goes a long way toward           preventing freeze-ups.

Your exterior faucets used for your garden hoses should be shut off from inside your basement and left open and hoses removed.

  February Recipe:                      Classic Chicken Soup

Ingredients:

1  3 1/2- to 4-pound chicken

6  carrots, peeled

4  celery stalks

1  large yellow onion, quartered

2 1/2  teaspoons kosher salt

Directions:

Rinse the chicken inside and out and pat it dry with paper towels. Place the chicken in a large pot.

Cut 3 of the carrots and 2 of the celery stalks into 1-inch pieces. Quarter the onion. Add the cut vegetables to the pot with the salt, peppercorns, and enough cold water to cover (about 8 cups). Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, skimming any foam that rises to the top, until the chicken is cooked through, about 30 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a bowl and let cool.

Strain the broth, discarding the vegetables. Return the broth to the pot. Thinly slice the remaining carrots and celery. Add them to the broth and simmer until tender, about 10 minutes.

When the chicken is cool enough to handle, shred the meat and add it to the soup. Ladle into individual bowls

Magic Carpet Inc. offers 24 hr. Water Restoration & Emergency Water Damage Services.

We have the most modern and energy efficient equipment available to solve these problems.
We first ask the homeowner (business owner) to remove as much as possible from the affected area and to elevate all furniture off the carpeting to avoid further damage.

It usually is a very good idea to open all windows as the relative humidity outside is usually lower than the water damaged area.

We then install a turbo dryer(s) underneath the carpet (We lift the edge or seam) to float the carpet, separating the carpet and pad from each other and then forcing all the water out of the floor and into the air.

Next we set up dehumidifier(s) to remove all excess water that is being forced into the air by the turbo dryer(s). The carpeting is then treated with Microban, a product that kills mold and mildew.

We monitor all water restoration services on a daily basis to track the needs to add/ remove equipment ensuring a quality job.

On top of the above services, we recommend when the carpeting is completely dry, we do a complete carpet cleaning job to the water damaged area to restore your carpeting back to what it was before the damage occurred.

Experiencing Mold?
Give us a call!

Molds are microscopic organisms found virtually everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold is alive, but it is neither a plant nor an animal. Mold is a type of fungus.

Mold seeks MOISTURE, WARMTH, and FOOD, and all three conditions are necessary for it to grow. Mold is most likely to find a place to grow in a bathroom, basement or kitchen, but it can grow in other rooms if conditions are favorable.

Mold spores can thrive and reproduce in wet or damp parts of your home: areas that have had flooding or where leakage has occurred in roofs, pipes, or walls, or areas around house plants, especially ones that sometimes are over-watered.

In just 48 hours, a moist environment combined with room-temperature conditions and an organic food source can lead to mold growth

Health effects of Mold

Molds are generally airborne and can easily spread to other areas of the house by traveling through the air; these may also be inhaled into our lungs and cause health problems. Generally, exposure to any mold may cause allergic symptoms such as watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, itching, wheezing, headache, fatigue, and asthma break out.

Is your upholstery really clean?

WARNING: Unhealthy substances are being invisibly transferred onto your upholstered fabrics.

Pets, clothing, purses and briefcases can transfer germs onto your textiles. Exhaust, asphalt, pollens, dust, airborne grease, and food particles contribute to an unhealthy fabric.

Just because a fabric "looks" clean doesn't mean that it is really clean. The cleaner you keep your fabric, the longer it will last.

Carpet Care

If you want to extend the life of your carpeting, you need to clean it often. A soiled carpet contains sand and other debris that will wear your carpet's fibers. Every time you walk on your carpet, you are grinding the soil into the fibers, permanently scratching and wearing them. A carpet cleaning will remove these damaging particles. But how often should you clean it?

How often you clean your carpet depends on a number of different factors. You must consider how many people are in your home, if you have kids, if you have pets and whether or not smokers are in your home.

For example, if you have a house with two adults, you should clean your carpet every six to twelve months. If those two people are smokers, you should clean it every four months. If you have children or pets in your home, you should clean it at least every 4 months.
